ReplyDeleteI discovered your blog recently and I must say this is the best resource about tea ceremony I've ever read online. I just love your explanations about the spirit of chanoyu!
When I was in Kyoto as an exchange student, I practiced in a club which had connections to the Urasenke tea masters. I used to think that o-keiko was too hard for me and that I wasn't made for tea ceremony. Your comments helped me understand so much about my past experience! Now I'm yearning to go back to o-keiko again, but this time with a more humble and dedicated attitude.
I wish I could attend all the events you're mentionning on your blog! It seems there are only few chanoyu courses here in Paris. Most of them consist in the practice of bonryaku temae, but I guess it should be instructive too :p

ReplyDeleteThank you for reading the blog and for your comment. We are extremely privileged to be able to study chanoyu. How lucky you were to be able to study in Kyoto, too.
Since I began to teach, I have come to appreciate the bonryaku temae. It has all the elements of chanoyu, and it requires minimal equipment. It is the temae for modern times. I have done bonryaku in my living room, in restaurants, on the train, hiking. It is compact and it is economical in its movements. Really it is the essence of chanoyu.
If you haven't already, please contact the Urasenke branch in Paris to ask if there is a study group or teacher you can join. I am sure there are other opportunities for you to attend okeiko.

Thank you for your answer! I'll be taking some bonryaku classes (I don't know yet if it will be o-keiko style or more of an introductory course)in a chashitsu called Kôjitsu-an that was donated by Urasenke to the Japan Cultural Institute in Paris. It seems to be an interesting place!
